Can Mouth be affected by Yeast Infection?
May 17, 2008 7:51 am Yeast Infection, oral Yeast Infection, thrushBabies and elderly persons generally are more susceptible to oral yeast infection. Yeast normally thrives in warm and moist conditions and what better place can it find than mouth. In everyday parlance it is known as oral thrush and becomes a big irritant for babies’ general well being.
The usual physical symptom of oral thrush is a white (at times it could be yellow too) film spread over tongue, inner lips or palate which refuses to go away when wiped with a moist cloth. In more serious instances red cracks at corners of mouth or red patches on tongue and palate might also appear. A skin rash may also accompany such an infection.
Babies, as we all know, can only gurgle, giggle or cry and none of these expressions are enough to explain the constant burning sensation they feel inside their mouth. Unable to properly express their discomfort, they do only what they can and keep whining the whole day unwilling to eat and unable to sleep soundly resulting in fatigue and digestive problems.
These yeast infections are generally passed on to babies from their mothers and they contract it either from vaginal yeast infection mother may be suffering from or from yeast infection in nipples, under the breast or within the breast of mother. So, if the baby is treated for oral thrush mother must simultaneously be treated for yeast infection else the infection will keep on recurring and will be more difficult to eradicate with each wave of recurrence.
A most common side effect of oral thrush is increased craving for sugar, alcohol or bread. Though adults will be able to express this excessive desire, babies will be unable to do so.
Adults can contract this infection through myriad ways. It could be as innocuous as dental plates or antibiotics or could be as diametrically opposite as pregnancy and contraceptive pills. It may erupt due to far more serious causes as iron deficiency or endocrine imbalances or could be a chronic skin disease or it may appear as a side effect of chemotherapy administered to a cancer patient.
All said and done, oral thrush though highly irritating is usually not a serious ailment and can be cured completely through proper diet and measured medication.
