A Comparison of Yeast Infection and Fungal Infection

3:19 pm Yeast Infection

Fungus is basically a small bush of miniscule rudimentary plants which do not possess chlorophyll. Yeast is a cell which forms this fungus. It is similar to mushroom, mold or mildew. So, in a broad sense yeasts do come under the general umbrella of fungus which can have many other forms.

Fungal infections may occur from such an innocuous activity as using a public toilet or a bath in a gymnasium. This is why some people always wear shower shoes in bathrooms shared by many unknown persons. Some of those who are extra cautious also follow this practice while using a hotel bathroom. These infections may also occur due to prolonged use of antibiotics or some serious illness.

Fungal infections can take various forms as ringworm, athlete’s foot or jock itch. It may also take the form of vaginal yeast infection leading to constant itching, irritation and occasional foul smelling creamy discharge. Yeast infections are not always restricted to vagina. They may also occur inside the mouth, on the nipples or under the breasts of women.

But fungus or yeast is not necessarily a dirty word. A mushroom is a fungus and we pay through our noses to dine on it in glitzy restaurants. Penicillin, the wonder drug of twentieth century, has its origin in mold which is just another type of fungus. Yeast is the main catalyst which causes bread to rise and is indispensible while baking a delicious cake or a creamy pastry.

The main job of yeast is to ferment but when a colony of yeast grows beyond the optimum size it is time for trouble. It is the main natural cleanser of vagina but when the population of yeast crosses the acceptable limit it leads to all sorts of itching, irritation and smelly discharges. It is really an overdose of something which is entirely natural. Fermentation inside the vagina exceeds natural requirements and all sorts of side effects start to appear.

So, there is nothing much to worry if you happen to be afflicted by yeast infection and rest assured that it will take at the most two weeks to completely rid your body of it through proper diet and moderate medication. If the situation is not really bad you can get over it within as little as two days.
